THE MISSING ICONS.
I am very excited and busy recently because I have recently started TEACHING (Fashion of course) at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology for students aiming to get admitted into London’s top art, design and fashion schools with a fantastic preparation program (University of the Arts London). This is a lot of fun and I am already thinking of new ways to prepare the students for their ‘fashion education’. I was hired to teach Marketing and Sales, but as it turns out, and my fantastic partner was right, I might need to re-think my classes a bit less ambitiously.
There is quite a cultural gap between « China » the rest of the world. Case in point.
It turns out that the « Iconic Images Class » which at first I thought would be just a bit of butter on the bread might be the whole loaf…and then some.
Still a bit in shock, I explain further. Two days ago I showed my new eager students a few pictures I had selected quickly because I figured they might want to use them as future reference in their inspirations. I started with Helmut Newton’s Le Smoking – Not sure about the « naked » effect, I had picked the most « tame » of the two. THE Classic. I meant for them to look at it then explain to me how this image was seminal both in Newton and Saint Laurent’s work.
Turned out none knew of neither YSL nor Newton’s work.
So, met with a sea of wide-eyed ‘kids’ (18 to 29 I think), I then showed them this portrait by Avedon. Silence. Finally one voice timidly suggested that it might be Elizabeth Taylor.
Indeed.
then I showed them these images:
No clue.
and her
Nothing. They had no clue who « The Blonde » above might be, and nothing of course about the Elephants suddenly in the room. Panicking just a little I skipped Guy Bourdin, Norman Parkinson, Cecil Beaton, Hort.P.Horst and jumped over Metropolis, Ava Gardner and Louise Brooks to arrive at this lady:
« Is that Elvis? » – Ahem, no – (I am not making this up).
-No IDEA who she might be. Not ONE of the 40 students had an inkling.
« She is beautiful » ventured one lone voice. Her name? I asked
That Lady would have had no issue with Paparazzi or crowds wanting to get to her in China, seeing that she is still completely unknown here and all.
So next week, I am starting them on a first journey from Metropolis to Batman’s Gotham then Blade Runner, Fifth Element to Mugler then finally to Gaga (HER they know!)
Then I will weave through the 20th Century to bring them to today by June…
Wish me luck.
This is where I want them to land as visual references at the end of the year:
« Bijou au Clair de Lune » Brassaï
so that they can see how this campaign below roots’ are buried.
Meanwhile, Beijing Design Week is in full swing and last night, I was invited to two social events lucky girl that I am… One, was a private concert in an embassy to meet a new ambassador, and sadly no particularly stylish creature caught my eye, (I admit it was neither the time nor the place)….

Yes, she is the Muse from last week, she is also now wearing this very interesting blouse with the pocket « block » and her friend is lovely. It was nice to show one of the Belle her picture from a prior post.
Too cool for school! I loved the Limited (Very Limited) Edition of the Peanuts Lacoste
The second was a Lacoste event in a very cool and well-hidden restaurant near Tiananmen « Capital M ». By the time i arrived, sadly my camera was dying and the girls were changing into pumpkins left and right, but I did manage to catch a few Belle du Jour. So below is my ‘moisson’ from last night Capital M Lacoste Party.
– « I am not sure who he is but I like his suit » – A Student.
Ils ne connaissaient cette image ni d’Eve ni d’Adam ‘so to speak’.
« They look happy, must be their wedding. He is fortunate, she is beautiful. he is not. »
Bon.
« Not sure who he is… I want to say ‘pool Champ’? or an ad for Turkish carpet? »

A bientot
Gabrielle

Could be a Belle du Jour, or a Botox mishap, or a Pussy Riot that ran all the way from Moscow. I kept wondering… How does she drink?
A bientot

the coolest girl in the house. She was strong, confident and stylish. Took two pictures of her then my camera died on me. Shame. I loved her neckace, Marni style, the jacket and the hair style. A punk side, the other Garbo. Very nicely played indeed.
Bises
Ca c’est si ils ecoutent… c’est a dire si ils ne sont pas sur Weibo ou en train de dormir…mais oui, il y a du boulot!
How is it that fashion students have absolutely no clue of the past icons? Is there really no material there for them to find, or do they not have the drive to learn and discover things on their own, but prefer to be spoon-fed what they need to know?
It’s not so much that they are spoon fed, it’s mostly that they start out not very curious – not unlike US kids actually – then internet is a bitch and without a VPN very restricted. They are actually very curious and once pointed in the right direction they go! but it is a long way to catch up on 100 years and counting!
