BRIDEMAIDS – (The Beijing Edition)

Quite often I am baffled by the peculiar sense of style of the FIB. Recently, in Beijing’s stifling heat a peculiar trend seemed to emerge among the Beijing Belles.

Lace bloomers and the matching top: Fearless.

They go to the office, on their lunch break, shopping or simply walk around as if they were heading for the ‘Chapel of Love’ either to get hitched or to be their BFF bridesmaid.

Culturally they marry in a succession of traditional wedding outfits, and THE key piece is an elaborate embroidered RED Cheongsam (or Qipao in Mandarin) so they really have no visual references to fluffy white lace gowns or cocktails chiffon numbers they seem to favor en masse. I am expecting a full blown « meringue » any day now.

More often than not, the FIB have very good legs, so they think nothing of  walking around in lacy white bloomers with the matching tops.

Pas de riz mais plein de mariées….

Dans la moiteur (polluée) de Pékin, de plus en plus de filles semblent se diriger droit vers l’Eglise oú elles sont attendues soit pour dire oui soit pour tenir la main de leur meilleure amie… Robes de « mariée » et tenues de mariage pullulent aux quatres coins de la ville. Les jeunes chinoises se marient dans une succession de robes traditionnelles dont la principale est depuis la nuit des temps une « Qipao » ou Cheongsam brodée en soie rouge écarlate.

Elles n’ont donc aucune référence visuelle réelle aux amoncellements de frous-frous, dentelle, ombrelle, mitaines etc… que l’on croisent donc à tous les coins de rues. C’est assez amusant parceque vraiment décalé. Elles sortent des bureaux, font des courses, se baladent dans des tenues qui ne choqueraient personne sur le parvis d’une église un samedi matin de juin en France.

Elle avait l’air mélancolique, je crois que je lui ai rendu le sourire en lui demandant de poser dans sa jolie robe.

La belle du jour.

I’ll admit she was on a photo shoot… but perfect no?

She was sweet, black chiffon and pearl buttons.

Truly FEARLESS, she decided to forgo the Wedding Gown and go shopping at the Guomao  in some sort of  « bridal »  nightgown! (I am being generous here)  ‘Daddy Warbucks’ right next to me was very pleased with the attention she got.
