Update from January 25… there is definitely something odd going on. They are everywhere… The double!

 

The oddest thing in Sanlitun North today.  I was by the Opposite House and in less than 8 minutes I saw not one but 4 couple of friends ‘look-alike’!

The Sartorial Siamese.

Un truc super étrange aujourd’hui… Je suis allée récuperer mon vélo devant l’Opposite House dans Sanlitun et en moins de 8 minutes j’ai croisé pas moins de quatre couples d’ami(e)s habillé(e)s identiques! Des Siamois Sartoriaux.

Look 1: « Les Copines » – The BFF Copycats –

Ok, so there I liked their long black silhouettes (I am seeing those more and more) so I did not immediately register that they were actually wearing the same thing! One was « bling’ed » up with the Roger Vivier shoes, her Chanel bag, the Chanel Sunnies. Her friend was slightly more subdued with sparkly/mink lined shoes, and the no-brand pink bag. But…Their clothes were identical. They told me they find that « pretty cool and funny ». Oh? – OK then.

Ces deux lá, je n’avait pas remarqué qu’elles portaient la même chose occupée que j’étais à repérer leurs longues silhouettes noires, les Roger Vivier, Les Chaneleries à foison etc.. c’est en les regardant de plus pres que j’ai percuté! « C’est cool » m’ont-elles précisées en choeur. Bon.

Look 2  – OUR FURRY FRIENDS – « Les Amies aux Poils Doux ».

Less than 2 minutes later, I saw these two ladies passing by.

Deux minutes plus tard, ces deux-lá:

Donc les deux ci-dessus: BO en jade vert aux oreilles + Veste en fourrure / Col de fourrure + Leggings noirs + cheveux attachés mais pas tirés.

Mmm…

Then Look 3 –  The BARBOUR ‘Grand Ma’. Again a minute later, yet another generation of women, the same style doppelgänger thing going on!

Troisieme look deux minutes plus tard: les Mamies en BARBOUR et encore une génération de plus mais avec la même similitude dans les vêtements!

La coiffure au « bol qui pousse », les petits foulards noués comme il faut, les sacs à mains moches, les chaussures plates ‘no-nonsense’, les vestes matelassées comfortables et dignes d’Elizabeth II en weekend à Balmoral.

Look 4 – Les Meilleurs pôtes. The « Guy Ritchie » Gentlemen Farmer »

Ok, so one of them was wearing an Alexander Wang’s leather jacket, the other was  less ‘bling’ in the grey cardi.

Alors, les jeans gris, les casquettes du Gentleman Fermier British, l’écharpe nonchalement nouées, les chaussures cools, l’allure chic mais sport. L’un est en cardigan plus simple que l’autre avec la veste en cuir Alexander Wang.

En fait, si je réfléchis un peu dans tous ces « couples » il me semble que systématiquement l’un est plus riche, plus ‘chatoyant’, plus Bling que l’autre. Il y aurait-il une dynamique SM avec un Dominant Sartorial et le Soumis du Style? Des looks similaires mais avec un(e) qui s’admire dans le look de son ami(e). « Ha! Je ris de me voir si Belle… » mais l’air de Marguerite qui vise directement celui ou celle qui s’habille comme soi avec juste un petit cran en moins? Un Doppelgänger vestimentaire? Maintenant que j’y pense, il me semble avoir vu recemment ce phénomene lors de la fete de Vogue.

Actually, thinking back and looking at the pictures, in ALL these odd couples, one was  systematically more ‘Bling is King‘ than the other…. And yes, I know that in Italy for example almost all the Borghese dress alike (tan+big hair+ fur jacket or coat+jeans+ some nice gold something if you have missed Milan in winter!). Same in Paris XIVth Arrondissement or any teenagers caught hanging by their school globally, they all look-alike, sure.  But grown-ups? Four times two in a row? Odd, so I have to wonder:

Is there a Sartorial Dominant and a Sartorial Submissive dynamic going on? Similar looks but on a slightly scaled-down budget? One basking in his fabulousness, ‘too cool for school’ style who looks back lovingly into his mirror-look-alike coolness who in turn looks UP to him/her??? Some Style Doppelgänger?

Come to think of it, I might have seen more of this particular dynamic at the Vogue event as well.

Similar Over The Top « Barbie goes to the Ball » Black Dresses + Elaborate Do’ + Majah Bling + Heels = Good friends hanging out together at THE top events of the season but ONE had great feather eyelashes (pretty cool) whilst the OTHER one had about conservatively enough carats to get a small African country out of debt on her ears… *She won the contest hands down! As it happens her ‘lace/taffeta » concoction thingy wasn’t even the issue anymore, not with that much sparkle going on! – and since i have been asked many times, YES! I am pretty sure that at the Vogue event all the Bling and the brands were ‘real’ even in China. No way any of these ladies would risk the loss of face of showing up in Faux! Even I was wearing my ‘real’ J.Crew jewels!…he he he.

Les deux robes du soir dignes de Barbie avec accumulation improbable de taffetas/dentelle/fourrure, chignons, bijoux, talons vertigineux: les deux amies étaient ensemble pour LA fête de la saison mais l’UNE avait des faux-cils merveilleux en plumes, et l’AUTRE des boucles d’oreilles d’une telle splendeur qu’elles auraient put facilement éponger la dette d’une petit pays Africain! Et du coup, forcément, sa robe ridicule en devenait quasi-invisible!

Mm.

Interesting.

Is that a common dynamic in friendships? Is that specific to China? I will research to see if I see that more often now that I will be on the lookout and will keep you posted. If you have similar sightings or any insights I’d love to read them.

 Est-ce une dynamique spécifique à la Chine? Je ne sais pas. Les grandes bourgeoises de Milan ou Paris s’habillent aussi souvent pareils mais ils me semblent qu’elles sont toutes ‘au meme niveau’ et que rarement l’une domine volontairement l’autre avec sa tenue. Quatre d’un coup. Quand meme. Je dois regarder mieux mais j’accueillerai tous les commentaires.
